Addressing the Educational Needs of Older Adults with Type 1 Diabetes

This Lancet article highlights that older adults with Type 1 diabetes have distinct and often unmet education and support needs as aging brings changes in vision, hearing, dexterity, cognition, and daily routines. Many existing diabetes programs focus on younger adults or people newly diagnosed, leaving older individuals without guidance that fits their abilities or safety concerns—especially the heightened risk of hypoglycemia. The authors emphasize the need for personalized, age-appropriate care: regular assessment of functional and cognitive changes, simplified management plans when needed, careful adjustment of glycemic targets, thoughtful use of diabetes technology, and meaningful involvement of caregivers. Their core message is that older adults with T1D require tailored education and coordinated care that aligns with the realities of aging.
