Life Stage Transitions for People with Type 1 Diabetes
The article below explains that people with Type 1 diabetes face two key life transitions that can complicate care: becoming an independent young adult and later navigating the challenges of older age. Young adults must take over full responsibility for diabetes management while juggling college, work, and mental-health stress. Older adults may experience physical or cognitive decline, more medical conditions, and greater reliance on caregivers, requiring simpler routines and adjusted blood sugar targets. The authors outline eight areas that change during these transitions—medical needs, education, physical and mental shifts, daily functioning, independence, support systems, and finances—and argue that current care systems don’t fully support these life stages. They call for better transition programs, mental-health integration, caregiver training, and research to improve care across the lifespan.
