Who We Are

Leadership

Joanne Milo

I’ve lived with T1D for almost 60 years, diagnosed at age 11, in New York. I’ve been involved with the T1D community for as many years, in fundraising and support groups. Active in the open source community (founder of FB Loop and Learn). Published The Savvy Diabetic: A Survival Guide (2012) on how to manage hospitals, doctors, and living with T1D. Publish weekly blog on D technology, research, and other interesting stuff.
I’ve been married to Richard for 23 years and I adore my Westie named Hey Buddy (who is enjoying his senior years).
I’m VERY concerned about all the issues of aging with T1D and helping our community plan and be prepared. Love the enthusiasm in this group!!!

Barbara Giammona

I’ve lived with T1D for 22 years, diagnosed at age 42. I am so grateful to have been connected with Joanne Milo through her Diabetes Girls Night Out group many years ago, which led to me progressing through all the latest technologies until I landed on Loop. Life changing!
I am retired now, after nearly 40 years in the Technical Communication field. My husband Chris and I have been married for 38 years. We split our time between two homes in Southern California (Palm Desert and Irvine) and a summer place in Ocean Grove, NJ. We spend a lot of time looking after my aging parents. Aside from the “fulltime job” of being a PWD, I enjoy choral singing, travel, writing, reading, wine, yoga, and pickleball. And perhaps I will someday write the Great American Novel!
I am very excited to be part of the T1D to 100 initiative, as this is an area where I feel we can make an important difference in many lives.

Jack Griswold

Hallo, I am Smiling Jack Griswold and I am approaching 69 years with T1D. I host monthly meetups as well as online Zoom meetings for adult T1Ds.

Iris Adam

Born and raised in Wyoming, I am one of six siblings, four of whom have lived with Type 1 diabetes (T1D). For many years, I worked at the University of California, Irvine, in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering, where I was the Director of Accreditation for engineering programs. In retirement, I’ve added genealogy, Bridge, travel, a little golf, and a lot of hiking.
My husband and I have raised two amazing daughters, and now have five adorable grandchildren!

Glenn Weber

I was diagnosed with T1D as a high school student in my junior year just before finals just a little over 48 years ago. My first few years of diabetes management were not so good, both because of just being young and also because of the poor treatment protocols that existed in the 1980’s and before.
In 1988, I married my wife and shortly after was introduced to JDF (now Breakthrough T1D). During my time with Breakthrough T1D, I served as a local board member and on the national government relations committee.
There are many issues with T1D that I’m concerned about for people with diabetes, but I will focus on just two here. I recently selected my first Medicare plan and found the process somewhat stressful for a T1. Also, I am concerned about aging issues and lack of access to certain tracks for retirement living because of admission policies that exclude people with diabetes and other chronic conditions.
I retired from working in finance a couple of years ago. My hobbies include boating, pickleball, travel, and genealogy. My wife Kim and I live in Orange County, California.

Marion Barker

I was diagnosed with T1D in graduate school at age 23 in 1979. Over the next 36 years, I transitioned from NPH and regular to MDI, from urine test strips to fingerstick meters. During that time, I got married, managed three pregnancies, and helped raise three children. We now have three grandchildren. So far, I am the only one in the immediate family with T1D.
I retired in Feb 2021 from a career in the aerospace industry. My final jobs there involved Flight Software for space instruments, along with testing and data analysis tasks. Now that I’m retired, I can devote more time to volunteer work on Open-Source Automated Insulin Delivery systems like Loop, editing LoopDocs, and supporting the Loop and Learn team.
