MedArrive’s purchase of software assets from Inbound Health earlier this week is the latest, but likely not the last, move by companies jockeying for the best position in the burgeoning hospital-at-home market.
Many health systems are looking to outside companies to help them establish home-based care programs, and in the past year vendors have switched up their business models and other companies have entered the space. Their efforts have taken on more significance since last month when Medicare’s Acute Hospital Care at Home waiver was extended through September 2030.
There isn’t a one-size-fits all approach to standing up hospital-at-home, so health systems have to be strategic in selecting the right partners, said Tom Kiesau who advises providers on hospital-at-home programs at healthcare advisory firm Chartis.
“The goal isn’t just to assemble vendors, but to design an integrated care model. That means thoughtfully selecting partners, aligning capabilities and ensuring that every service delivered in the home connects into a cohesive patient experience,” Kiesau said.
Here’s what to know about the companies offering hospital-at-home services and the health systems partnering with them.
DispatchHealth
DispatchHealth launched in 2013 to provide urgent, acute and transitional care to patients at home using emergency medical technicians. It acquired hospital-at-home technology company Medically Home last year.
The combined company offers turnkey and customized solutions for hospital-at-home programs. It provides a wide variety of services including staff to attend to patients in homes and man command centers. The company also provides technology platforms and logistics solutions to coordinate home-based care.
Denver-based DispatchHealth operates across 20 states in 50 markets. The company’s health system partners include Ohio-based Cleveland Clinic and Saint Francis Health System in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Current Health
United Kingdom-based Current Health launched in the U.S. in 2019, providing technology for home-based care programs. Best Buy acquired the company in 2021 and sold it back to co-founder Chris McGhee last year.
Current Health offers technology that monitors electronic health records for patient symptoms and vital signs and a 24/7 command center staffed by registered nurses, as well as logistics technology that can help coordinate staffing and management support.
The company introduced a tool in December that provides neurological assessments virtually for cancer patients undergoing CAR-T therapy.
Current Health operates across 34 states and has partnerships with approximately 50 health systems, including Mass General Brigham and UMass Memorial Health.
Biofourmis
Boston-based Biofourmis was founded in 2015. The technology company offers a cloud-based platform that helps health systems coordinate in-home health services, including diagnostics, durable medical equipment, medication and transportation.
Biofourmis added remote patient monitoring equipment in 2024 through its acquisition of healthcare technology company CoPilotIQ.
Biofourmis’ hospital-at-home partnerships include Altamonte Springs, Florida-based AdventVent Health and Fort Myers, Florida-based Lee Health.
MedArrive
MedArrive launched in 2020 as a mobile-integrated care platform offering telehealth visits and in-home care using paramedics.
The New York-based company pivoted last year to become a logistics platform that schedules clinician visits to patients’ homes. MedArrive’s purchase of software assets from Inbound Health is intended to give it the ability to identify and route patients to the most appropriate home-based care program.
“We are really evangelizing to health systems that there is a huge opportunity to manage these programs across different [home care] silos,” Chief Operating Officer Greer Rios said.
MedArrive operates across nine states. Its health system partners include Newark, Delaware-based ChristianaCare.
Shields at Home
Tampa, Florida-based Shields at Home launched in 2023 as a joint-venture between Shields Capital Advisors and Florida-based Tampa General Hospital.
The company works directly with health systems to design and implement customized home-based care programs. It helps with logistics, analytics and the operational infrastructure, but does not provide any technology. Shields will work with health systems to select technology vendors. The company places registered nurses onsite at partner health systems to select and enroll patients in home-based care programs.
“I view us as the thought partner in designing the program,” co-founder Jack Shields said.
Shields at Home has partnerships with Tampa General Hospital, New York- Presbyterian Hospital and Lakeland Regional Hospital in Lakeland, Florida.
