About T1D to 100
Purpose/Mission of T1D to 100
T1D to 100 is a community-based volunteer group of people living with Type 1 diabetes, working to:
- Identify health issues unique to people aging with Type 1 Diabetes (T1D).
- Promote solutions to sustain a safe and comfortable environment for people aging with T1D.
- Raise awareness of health issues encountered by people with T1D to healthcare providers.
- Interface with the diabetes research community and the medical professionals to explain and validate our issues and solutions, as well as support our efforts to educate the T1D aging community.
- Focus on useful tools to stay safe and community to practice resilience and coping skills.
Our goals:
- Awareness in the diabetes/geriatric research community of the urgent needs of the aging T1D population, which is a large and rapidly growing demographic
- Share our shared experiences and knowledge with the larger aging T1D population, who currently don’t have information to age well, with informed planning and safely and without fear.
- Educate healthcare professionals who currently have very few resources or little knowledge to assist their aging T1D patients.
- Offer a community connection to address loneliness, lack of support and issues of coping and resilience.

What is the Significance of the Imagery?
The artwork we use in T1D to 100 symbolizes the Journey of Life. Like a river forever flowing, it brings calm stretches and sudden challenges. For those living with Type 1 diabetes, the waters run deeper, carrying challenge but also resilience, strength, and unexpected joy. With experience, new tools, and community support, we navigate these waters with greater confidence, hope, and compassion.”
The graphics we use in T1D to 100 symbolize the Journey of Life. Like a river forever flowing, it brings calm stretches and sudden challenges. For those of us living with Type 1 diabetes, the river carries an extra current, with daily complexities and the probability of unexpected obstacles, sometimes smooth, sometimes stormy, carrying challenge. Yet within this journey lies strength, resilience, and the opportunity to discover grace, hope, and even joy along the way. Each person travels their own unique course along this river, shaped by both challenge and beauty.
The imagery honors this personal voyage, encouraging us to find meaning in the passage, to steer toward calmer waters when we can, and to carry forward with courage and compassion as we navigate the Journey of Life.

The Wit and Wisdom of Fran Carpentier: 57 Years with Type 1 Diabetes
“I think that my first husband felt that I made life hard for us. I couldn’t be as spontaneous as he probably wanted me to be. You know this was pre-insulin pumps and CGMs. We were young, he wanted to go out and do things and I felt I had to do things a certain way to keep my sugar really well-controlled. I think I’m the most fun person in the room, but he felt that I was a wet blanket. There was probably truth to it forty years ago. Today, technology has freed up life for us T1Ds. Of course that freedom means relying on all manner of medical apparatus and being visible about it.”
Museum curator, 77, Learns Gen Z (AAVE) Slang and Goes Viral: “Honestly, she ate.”
The National Gallery of Art’s deputy head of sculpture stepped behind a 16th-century urn and began to describe it to the camera. “Chat, I’m about to buss it down Roman Empire style,” said Alison Luchs, 77, using Gen Z slang she recently learned. “Haters will say this urn is mid, but they don’t know we’ve clocked its tea.”
Aging with T1D: In Living Color
Haidee Merrit is a New Hampshire-based artist best known in theT1D community as a cartoonist whose three books of diabetes-themed cartoons and illustrations share a humorous, and often edgy, take on life as a type one. She is also a colorful artist whose works are vibrant and lively, often featuring vividly detailed insects or splashy abstract landscapes. She met with us at T1Dto100 to talk about what led her to her specific art forms and her philosophy about living with T1D.
