Medha Munshi, MD, has been a researcher in gerontology and endocrinology for over 20 years, long before anyone was really talking about the issues we face as we live/age with Type 1 diabetes. And she was the first to jump on the T1Dto100 Advisory Panel. She is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School and founder of the International Geriatric Diabetes Society (https://www.geriatricdiabetes.org/).
The primary focus of Dr. Munshi’s clinical research is to identify the challenges faced by older individuals with diabetes, develop strategies to overcome these barriers, and improve clinical and functional outcomes, including quality of life.
The crucial areas for her investigations have included the changes/challenges of treating hypoglycemia & hyperglycemia as we age, diabetes management in community-living older adults, and diabetes management in the LTC facilities.
Some of the research topics we will hear about from Dr. Munshi:
- Dementia/cognition
- Mobility and muscle strength, including hands,
- Loss of loved ones and support system,
- Care in hospitals and facilities (and how to prepare and be safe)
- Managing T1D and technology
- How the aging T1D experiences hypoglycemia and hyperglycemia … and how to manage it.
- Recommendations to the community
- How to be involved in studies and with the research community?
We are so honored to have Dr. Munshi share her work and listen to the voices of our community!

Aging with Type 1 Diabetes: When You Have a Terrible Accident
Jim was on his road bike – actually biking to a retreat for T1Ds – when he was hit by a pickup truck on the road. Nine rib fractures, four pelvic fractures, and a broken left collarbone later, he found himself in the Emergency Room at a hospital. His phone, which he used to run his Loop system (controlling his pump and CGM) was destroyed, and his computer, which he used to build that system, was cracked in the accident. With just a couple of diabetes supplies he packed for the weekend, he was admitted to the hospital. Read on to learn more about how Jim survived this experience, about his overall diabetes journey, aging with T1D, and what he learned about being prepared for an emergency as a T1D.

Inflammation and Aging … or “Inflammaging”
As we age, we tend to have more aches, pains, and diseases. Researchers believe that some of these may be related to persistent inflammation. They call it “inflammaging” — age-related inflammation, which is present even in the absence of injury or illness.
It’s SO Important to Stay Connected!
Super-agers are a diverse bunch; they don’t share a magic diet, exercise regimen or medication. But the one thing that does unite them is how they view the importance of social relationships.
